A scent that can change your life – if you use it the right way
Written by Tara Derakshan
Most people wear fragrance. Very few know how to use it.
A scent, on its own, doesn’t change anything. It lingers on the skin, becomes part of how you’re perceived, maybe even how you feel for a moment. But then the moment passes, and you return to the same thoughts, the same patterns, the same way of being.
Because change doesn’t come from what you wear.
It comes from how you use it.
This is what altered states are about.
Not fragrance as an accessory, but as a tool. A way to shift how you feel, how you think, how you move through your life. A way to interrupt the automatic and step into something intentional.
Used without awareness, it remains just a scent.
Used with intention, it becomes something else entirely.
A portal. A way to move from one inner state to another. From where you are, to where you choose to be. Not by escaping your reality, but by changing the state from which you experience it.
There is a moment each morning that most people miss.
It happens quietly, before the world reaches you, before your phone lights up, before anything asks something of you. A small, almost invisible window where nothing has fully formed yet. And in that space, your mind begins to move.
The same thoughts return.
Not loudly, not dramatically, but in a way that feels so familiar you don’t question it. Subtle expectations about how the day will go. Quiet assumptions about who you are. Old emotions waiting just beneath the surface.
It feels natural.
It feels like you.
But it isn’t you.
It’s repetition.
Most people wake up and step straight back into yesterday. The same thoughts, the same emotions, the same reactions — repeated so many times they’ve become identity.
And slowly, without ever deciding to, they recreate the same life.
What shapes your life is not only what happens around you.
It is what happens within you. Thought by thought. Feeling by feeling.
Your inner world shapes your outer reality.
And over time, those patterns become your life.
This is where something shifts.
Because if your inner world creates your outer experience, then change doesn’t begin out there.
It begins within.
In the moment you become aware of what you are thinking.
In the moment you pause, instead of automatically following.
In the moment you realize:
You are not your thoughts.
They are patterns.
And patterns can change.
But not instantly.
Not through one decision.
Through repetition.
Everything you are today has been practiced.
And anything practiced can be reshaped.
This is where NEH lives.
Not as something you wear, but as something you return to.
A way to interrupt the automatic.
To gently guide yourself out of the past and into something intentional.
Because when the mind drifts, as it will, you need something that brings you back.
Scent moves differently than thought. It doesn’t ask you to analyze or understand. It connects directly to memory, emotion, and the body — which is why it can shift how you feel, almost instantly.
It brings you into the present.
Into a state you can feel.
Over time, the portal becomes an anchor.
Something your body recognizes.
A direct path back.
Each scent carries a specific energy — a state you can step into and return to.
And through repetition, it becomes familiar. Not something you reach for.
Something you know.
So tomorrow morning, begin here.
Pause. Before you reach for your phone, notice what your mind is offering you.
The familiar thoughts. The automatic patterns. And instead of following them, choose. Choose one thought that expands you, even slightly. One version of yourself you are willing to step into.
Stay with it.
Breathe it in.
And if you have your scent, let it anchor that moment.
Let it hold the state you are choosing, so your body can begin to recognize it — not as something distant, but as something known.
This is how it begins.
Not all at once.
But in small, intentional returns.
You are not starting from zero.
You are returning. And every time you choose differently, something shifts.
Quietly. Deeply. Irreversibly.
Every new journey begins with a choice. Thank you for choosing NEH.
Let the ceremony begin.
